Tas bushfire under control: fire service

A bushfire is under control after raging for five days in Tasmania's north.

Crews were on Sunday assessing the site of the blaze near George Town, checking stumps for embers and strengthening containment lines.

The bushfire, which was reported on March 3, burnt through more than 1000ha in the state forest area.

Nearby Lefroy was evacuated on Wednesday as the fire came within a kilometre of homes, but properties were spared as the fire front turned east.

A Tasmania Fire Service spokesman said crews would take as long as required to ensure the fire was "nice and cold".

"The best thing we can do is hope for more rain, to let it soak in," he told AAP on Sunday.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

No structural damage had been reported, the TFS spokesman said.
