Patient admittance rates at the Royal Hobart Hospital are the worst in the nation but the state government says it is working on the problem.

In parliament on Thursday, Opposition Leader Rebecca White cited data showing that in the first two months of 2017 it took an average 19 hours for 90 per cent of patients to move from the emergency department into a ward, compared with 12 hours the previous year.

"We are well aware of the issues. We have engaged with the medical association ... but it's not fair to say we haven't responded appropriately," Premier Will Hodgman said.
