Tasmania's speaker Elise Archer has been promoted in a Liberal government cabinet reshuffle following the sudden resignation of the state's energy minister.

Matthew Groom announced at the weekend he was standing down from several portfolios and won't contest a March election, to spend more time with his family.

On Thursday, Premier Will Hodgman named Ms Archer as the state's new minister for Justice, Corrections, Environment and Parks, and the Arts.

Amid the reshuffle, Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin, who is seriously unwell with brain cancer, announced her resignation.

"These challenging circumstances are significant, but the test of any government is how it responds," Mr Hodgman said.

Mr Hodgman retained Minister for Human Services Jacquie Petrusma, despite calls from opposition parties for her to be striped of her portfolio following the death of a baby subject to two child protection notifications earlier this month.

The state's current treasurer Guy Barnett takes over as Energy Minister.

Mr Hodgman is the state's new attorney-general, while Treasurer Peter Gutwein has added state growth to his portfolio.

Mark Shelton will be nominated to replace Ms Archer as speaker, with the new cabinet to be sworn in on Monday.
