Tasmania's Flinders Island will get a bit greener with a multimillion dollar project for renewable energy sources to deliver the majority of its electricity needs.

The $13 million Flinders Island Hybrid Energy Hub Project was launched on Monday by the state government and aims to replace more than 60 per cent of the Bass Strait island's diesel-generated energy within two years.

The project will capture energy through a combination of solar and wind, and be stored in new facilities, before distribution via a sophisticated control system.
