A Tasmanian man has been airlifted to safety after being stranded in snow for four days on the state's Overland Track.

The 44-year-old Hobart man raised the alarm about midday (AEST) on Wednesday from the Kia Ora Hut, part-way along the famous walking track which winds through the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park.

"As his food was running low and the snow made it impossible for him to make it out, he had activated his emergency beacon," police said of the man, who was flown to Hobart in a helicopter, uninjured and in good health.
