Bushfire prompts warning for southern Tas

Residents near an uncontained bushfire in southern Tasmania have been warned to stay alert amid changing wind conditions.

The four-day-old blaze northeast of Hobart at Runnymede had burnt through more than 1600 hectares of bush including state forest, conservation area and private land by Friday afternoon.

Three aircraft and more than 15 tankers are working to control the fire which is burning in largely inaccessible areas.

"There is currently no major threat to property however residents in the area are asked to keep themselves informed in case conditions change," a Tasmania Fire Service station officer Barry Bones said.

The TFS, along with personnel from the Parks and Wildlife Service and SES are battling the blaze with backburning operations sending smoke across parts of Hobart.

Two community meetings will be held on Saturday at the centres of Pawleena and Nugent to answer questions from residents.

A second fire which started in the northern Hobart suburb of Granton on Friday is close to being controlled after a series of water bombings.

"Whilst crews have the upper-hand on the fire, conditions can change quickly and the public is asked to stay informed," Mr Bones said.
