A solo sailor and his sinking boat have been rescued off the Tasmanian coast.

The vessel started taking on water near Foster Island off Cape Portland in the State's northeast at midday on Sunday, police say.

The Tasmanian Maritime College training vessel was nearby and was quickly on scene and towed the sailing boat and the skipper to Fosters Inlet.
