Missing man found in Tasmanian bush

Hobart man Siegmund Glowacki has spent much of his life working in and exploring the bush, but even his family started to worry when the 67-year-old went missing for two nights in Tasmania's west.

Wearing only shorts, a T-shirt and Crocs shoes and carrying no provisions, Mr Glowacki went missing on Tuesday while panning for gold in the Newell River near Queenstown.

Almost two days later and after a land and air search, he was found on Thursday safe and well.

Wolfgang Glowacki said his father has gone to hospital for a check-up.

"He's basically a very well-versed bushman ... we knew he would easily cope out there for a couple of days without any problem," Wolfgang told AAP.

"But we were starting to get a bit worried about him when he hadn't turned up by this afternoon."

Battling dense bush and rugged terrain, search parties on Wednesday found one of Mr Glowacki's shoes and a makeshift bed where they believed he spent his first night, 5km from where he was last seen.

Tracker dogs and a helicopter with heat sensors joined the search effort, which comprised scores of emergency service workers and volunteers.

Police Inspector Stuart Wilkinson said Mr Glowacki took a wrong turn and became disoriented on Tuesday.

"He simply became lost while doing his hobby of gold panning. He was not unprepared or ill-equipped as it was not his intention to go bushwalking or be in the bush for any period," he said.

"The only advice I would provide to anyone who ever finds themselves in a similar situation is to stay where you are when you believe you are lost - we will find you much quicker."
