Retro caravans feature in Mona's Tas plan

Retro caravans will be among the accommodation options at a new venture proposed by Hobart's Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) operator, David Walsh.

The Mona Accommodation Berriedale (Moab) development, on the waterfront site of a former caravan park adjacent the museum north of Hobart, has been granted stage-one local government approval.

Council would lease the land to Mr Walsh who would fund the project.

"(The development) proposes the construction of prefabricated accommodation pods and on-site retro caravans, and powered sites, on-site tents and un-powered camper sites," Glenorchy City Council said in a statement released on Thursday.

The "affordable" accommodation precinct would include communal cooking, laundry and activity facilities, and administration and service buildings.

In its design concept, Mona gave a more detailed design perspective.

"All the accommodation pods are unique, offer choice appealing to different needs and personality types, provide varying levels of shelter from the elements, while emphasising the notion of outdoor living with minimum footprints and maximum connection to the outdoors," the information pack reads.

"If they do touch the earth, they do it lightly."

Mr Walsh said he intends to keep fees down to allow as many people as possible to visit.

"My dream is of an even more inclusive Mona," he wrote.

Moab is scheduled for completion by late 2016 and is expected to cater for up to 50,000 visitors a year.
