Rain offers reprieve for Tasmanian dams

Recent rainfall across Tasmania will see the state avoid previously forecast minimum dam levels, Energy Minister Matthew Groom says.

Hydro-electric scheme dam levels on Monday recorded their first increase since September, shifting up 0.2 per cent to 13 per cent. But with the Bass Strait electricity cable still out of order the state government will push ahead with its backup plan of using temporary diesel generators.

"Storages are likely to remain above the projected low of approximately 12 per cent," Mr Groom told parliament on Tuesday, adding that forecast high winds could hinder repairs of the Basslink cable later in the week.
