Pussy Riot in Hobart for Dark Mofo

Members of controversial Russian punk band Pussy Riot will be in Hobart for the city's Dark Mofo festival.

Additional acts revealed on Wednesday include the feminist outfit who rose to global fame after three members were arrested in 2012 for staging a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour which was critical of leader Vladimir Putin.

The chain of events inspired a film documentary, Act and Punishment, which will be screened as part of the Dark Mofo line up on June 14, followed by a Q&A with Pussy Riot's Maria 'Masha' Alyokhina and Alexander 'Sasha' Bogino.

The duo will also produce a late-night DJ set as part of a multicultural music show.

Starting on June 8, the 14-day Dark Mofo festival has attracted controversy with plans for a bloody sacrificial ritual by Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch, involving a freshly killed bull.

Animal welfare groups and sections of the community have rallied against the Nitsch act, but festival hosts Mona have pushed on with the performance piece titled 150.Action which has since sold out.
