A Tasmanian pedestrian who died after a hit-run crash on New Year's Day may have been hit by a truck, police believe as they continue to search for a driver.

Claremont man Gary John Hayes, 30, was crossing the Midland Highway at Brighton on January 1 when he was hit and left for dead on the road.

"This is a tragic event, and police want to identify the driver and vehicle involved so the victim's family can have some closure," Sergeant Luke Walker said on Wednesday.

A large vehicle, possibly a truck or similar may have been involved, Sgt Walker said.
