A pilot has escaped with broken bones and cuts after his helicopter crashed while spraying crops in regional Tasmania.

The Schweizer 300C clipped powerlines just after 12.30pm (AEST) on Wednesday before plunging to the ground, leaving a twisted mass of metal with debris strewn across a paddock near Deloraine in the state's north.

A 37-year-old man from Bridport was at the controls and the sole occupant of the aircraft, and was rushed to hospital.

"He remains in a serious but stable condition, with broken bones, and facial lacerations," police said.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been notified of the crash.
