A NSW man will be extradited to Tasmania charged with murdering his elderly mother.

The 88-year-old died in her Sandy Bay home on March 4 after allegedly being administered medication.

Her son, 61, is due to be extradited from NSW to Tasmania on Saturday.

The man was charged with her murder on Friday, and appeared before Woy Woy Court House in NSW, where his extradition was ordered.

It's expected the man will arrive at Hobart airport on Saturday evening, escorted by police officers.

He will attend a special sitting at Hobart Magistrates Court on Sunday.

It's alleged the man travelled to Hobart in the days before his mother's death.

Tasmanian police officers travelled to the NSW Central Coast earlier this week and searched several properties with the help of local officers before the man was arrested at his workplace on Friday.
