No policy for Aust Day change by Tas Libs

Tasmania's Liberal government will not be backing calls to change the date of Australia Day as Hobart City Council continues to lobby for a shift.

The council has asked Canberra to consider changing the date of the national day, citing growing numbers of the Aboriginal community and general public who are uncomfortable with January 26, based on European occupation.

"It certainly is a date that currently causes concern to people, especially Aboriginal people, I understand that," Premier Will Hodgman told parliament on Monday, adding that his administration has no policy position for change, and it is a matter for the federal government.
