The case of a NSW doctor accused of murdering his elderly Hobart mother has been referred to a lower court for further consideration.

Stephen John Edwards, who worked as a GP at Woy Woy on the NSW central coast, is charged with killing his 88-year-old mother Nelda Mavis Edwards on March 4 at the exclusive Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay.

Supreme Court chief justice Alan Blow on Thursday referred Edwards to the Court of Petty Sessions for preliminary proceedings on March 6. He was granted bail in July.
