Neighbours help save Hobart man from smoke

Alert neighbours have helped save the life of a young Hobart man who was rescued by firefighters from his smoke-filled home.

Just after 10am on Saturday residents at Glenorchy could hear a smoke detector and when they couldn't raise an occupant from inside the unit, called triple-0 and subsequently fire crews found the man suffering smoke inhalation inside his bedroom.

"Had it not been for his quick-acting neighbours and the prompt response of the fire service, he may not have survived," officer John Ling said, adding that investigations found the alarm was activated by food left unattended on the stove.
