National dislike for Tas free speech Bill

A national legal human rights organisation is the latest in a string of opponents to Tasmania's proposed change to free speech legislation.

Australian Lawyers for Human Rights has urged the state's parliament to reject the Liberal administration's amendment of the anti-discrimination bill, which the government claims will create a more level playing field for religious groups ahead of the planned February plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

"The Act as it currently stands sufficiently achieves an appropriate balance between providing protection from discrimination and unlawful conduct whilst allowing for genuine public debate and discussion," spokesman Nicholas Stewart said, joining other opponents such as Tasmania's anti-discrimination commissioner.
