Crash spot on Labor's fix-it list

A crash blackspot in northern Tasmania where a young mother and her baby were killed has become a federal election issue with the local Labor candidate committing to fix problems on the stretch of highway.

Hayley Maree Best, 16, and her 2-month old son died after a car in which they were passengers collided with a Mack truck on Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Deep Creek Road and the Bass Highway near Wynyard.

The baby's father, 19, was behind the wheel at the time and he remains hospitalised in a stable condition.

Investigations into the crash are continuing but police think the decades-old Corolla failed to give way to the prime mover.

Labor candidate for the seat of Braddon, Justine Keay announced on Thursday that a Bill Shorten-led government will spend $600,000 identifying priority areas in need of repair or modification along the Bass Highway.

"It is disappointing that neither the state or federal budgets contained a single cent for this project this year, or over the forward estimates," Ms Keay said.

The highway currently carries more than one million tonnes of road freight annually and the mass is expected to increase, the lower house candidate said.
