Mining royalties rise for Tasmania

Tasmania's mining industry is forecast to return royalties for the financial year of about $41 million, more than double the previous period.

After a dull few years, which saw some of the state's mines close or reduce operations in line with falling commodity prices, Resources Minister Guy Barnett on Wednesday delivered the good news.

"The industry is also expected to make a direct contribution to the state's finances of about $40 million in royalties this year, helping to fund our hospitals and our schools," he said, citing the 2015/16 royalties figure of $15 million.
