A Launceston man has been imprisoned for the attempted murder of his wife less than three years after their arranged marriage in India.

Lokendra Singh was arrested in February 2014 when he slashed his wife's throat with a serrated kitchen knife, before trying to strangle and suffocate her at their Launceston home, Tasmanian Supreme Court judge Robert Pearce said on Friday.

The couple had argued about financial matters and underlying "cultural issues", said the judge who ordered that Singh, now aged 31, spend at least five years of his eight-year sentence behind bars.
