A Canberra man is dead after falling while bushwalking on Tasmania's highest peak.

The 59-year-old was returning from the summit of Mt Ossa in the state's central highlands on Sunday when he fell on a steep section of track and suffered head injuries, police say.

His son, 20, called for help and was heard by a nearby walking group who used a satellite phone to raise the alarm with authorities.

Poor weather is hampering attempts to reach the location by helicopter and a group of SES and police have started to walk in.
