Major spending in the Tasmanian budget

MAJOR SPENDING - TASMANIAN BUDGET 2017/18

* Health: $1.72 billion (30 per cent)

* Education: $1.54 billion (27 per cent)

* Public order/safety: $542 million (nine per cent)

* Social security/welfare: $454 million (eight per cent)

* Public sector superannuation payments: $286 million (five per cent)

* Transport/communications: $279 million (five per cent)

* Housing/community amenities: $188 million (three per cent)

HIGHLIGHTS

* Additional four-year health spending commitment of $658 million including 106 hospital beds and more than 350 staff, taking the overall sector funding to more than $7 billion

* $827 million in joint-federal government funding for road and bridge infrastructure

* Creation of 800 jobs through a $60 million loans scheme for councils to drive infrastructure works

* Extension of the first-home builders grant of $20,000

* An estimated $60 million to digitalise services, including systems used by police and health services

* Commitments to tourism including $15 million for facilities including a visitor centre at Cradle Mountain

* More than $2 million to build a new breeding facility for the endangered orange-bellied Parrot
