Lib to replace retiring Tasmanian state MP

Liberal Nic Street has been elected to replace retiring Tasmanian Liberal MP Paul Harriss in a recount.

Mr Harriss' Franklin ballot papers were redistributed to the eight candidates who nominated themselves for consideration in a recount of the last election results, and Mr Street picked up more than half of the available votes.

Counting will continue on Wednesday, but Mr Street has 6101 votes, ahead of fellow Liberal Sue Bastone on 3481.

Tasmania's lower house has five five-member electorates, and vacancies are filled by recounting the votes used to elect the vacating MP and then redistributing them to the losing candidates.
