Labor disturbed by Cranston allegations

The implication of one of Australia's most senior tax officials in a $165 million fraud investigation is disturbing news, federal Labor's Chris Bowen says.

Deputy tax commissioner Michael Cranston has been issued with a court attendance notice for allegedly abusing his position as a public official after his son Adam Cranston and 24-year-old daughter were arrested in Sydney as part of a major fraud case alleging money stolen from the Commonwealth.

"Of course it's a disturbing case but the courts should be allowed to do their job; the course of justice and law should be allowed to proceed without political commentary," Mr Bowen told reporters in Hobart on Thursday adding that the law enforcement agencies have Labor's full support.
