Inquiry for Tas Aboriginal recognition

The Tasmanian government will establish a parliamentary inquiry to look at increasing the recognition of the state's indigenous people.

Premier Will Hodgman wants to amend the Tasmanian constitution to acknowledge the Aboriginal community as the state's first people, and on Thursday he announced the formation of a standing committee to progress the matter.

"I want to ensure that the views of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community and the broader Tasmanian community are properly taken into account before we commit to a way forward," he said in a statement.

The working group is due to report back by October.
