A Hobart man has been charged with creating a nuisance after police responded to reports of suspicious packages at a suburban shopping centre.

A woman at Howrah's Shoreline Shopping Centre called police just before 8.30am (AEST) on Monday after finding the packages in a car park.

The man, 36 from Clarendon Vale, was arrested nearby while the car park and surrounding areas were evacuated and the bomb squad was called in.

A remote control robot was sent to investigate and later found the three packages were not dangerous.

"Whilst in this case the suspicious items were not deemed to be a threat, we commend the member of the public who observed the packages and reported the incident to police with her concerns," acting Inspector Sally Cottrell said.

The man is being held in custody and is due to face court on Monday evening.
