A man has faced court charged with attempted murder and arson after he allegedly set fire to a Hobart mental health facility, causing an estimated $2 million damage.

David Leslie Chandler, 53, on Thursday appeared before Magistrate Glenn Hay when he did not enter a plea or apply for bail over the blaze which destroyed a Tasmanian government-owned, century old building on Wednesday.

Prosecution papers tendered to the court charged Chandler with unlawlfully setting fire to the North Hobart building and the attempted murder of Kathlyn Brown. He is due to face court again on Tuesday.
