Growth and bright future for Tas

More Tasmanians will be university educated by 2025 in a move the state government believes will unlock the Apple Isle's full potential.

In announcing a new partnership agreement between the government and the University of Tasmania at a state reception celebrating the institution's 125th year, Premier Will Hodgman said he expected the co-operation to result in a brighter future for the state.

"As a government, we firmly believe that education gives Tasmanians the very best chance of getting a job and living a fulfilling life, and also unlocking the state's full potential," Mr Hodgman said on Saturday.

Five objectives for the next decade outlined in the agreement call for an increase in the number of Tasmanians in higher education by 10,000, an expanded research and higher education sector, introducing more international students to the Tasmanian community, aligning higher education with present and future workforce needs and bringing capital investment to regional centres.

University vice-chancellor Peter Rathjen said the goals were achievable and would have tangible impacts on Tasmania's community and economy.
