Fake $50 notes prompt Tas business warning

Fake $50 notes emblazoned with bright blue and white Chinese symbols are being passed off for real currency across Hobart, sparking a police investigation.

Images of the phoney fifties were released on Thursday after a number were discovered in circulation, prompting a warning to businesses to be on the lookout.

"The notes are distinctively fake and have apparent Chinese characters printed on both sides," Tasmania Police detective acting inspector Jim Semmens said in a statement, adding that a review of CCTV footage is underway to track down the fraudsters.
