Economic debate is likely to dominate Tasmania's parliament when both houses resume in the countdown to the state's May budget.

After a break of more than three weeks, the House of Assembly and Legislative Council return on Tuesday with Premier Will Hodgman, fresh from last week's Council of Australian Governments meeting, now able to confirm the state's strong GST revenue.

"We have managed to safeguard Tasmania against what would have been an horrendous attack on our budget," he said of the state's upcoming GST income, which is $132 million more than previously expected.

But the money will not be squandered, he added.

"We now need to make sure that what financial benefit has been obtained is directed appropriately into infrastructure that creates and generates economic activity."
