Council put on notice by Tas government

Aldermen at Glenorchy City Council have been given a week to explain to the Tasmanian government why they should not be suspended for up to six months.

"It is clear to me and to many in the community that the council is not functioning as it should ... if, after that seven days, and considering their responses, I form the view that suspending them is in the interests of the community, I will do that and move to appoint a commissioner," Local Government Minister Peter Gutwein said on Friday.

The move comes just four months after the government sacked the southern Huon Valley Council, citing long-standing problems with transparency, accountability and communication.
