Canberra millions to help oyster growers

The federal government will pay almost $1.5 million to protect Australia's oyster industry from a disease outbreak in Tasmania, where more than 95 per cent of the nation's stock is produced.

Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome was first detected in January and subsequent quarantine, containment and travel embargo measures have crippled the sector.

On Monday Canberra announced $1.47 million for diagnosis, recovery and management assistance for growers, with federal MP Eric Hutchinson reminding consumers that oysters available for sale from reputable retailers are safe to eat.
