The Tasmanian government has been asked to step in line with the rest of Australia and introduce a mandatory sex offender register for those convicted of serious crimes against children.

Community lobby group People Protecting Children has requested a review of the current legislation governing the registration of child sex offenders and child murderers in Tasmania.

The group's president, Allison Ritchie, said it is understood the state is the only jurisdiction in the country that does not require the compulsory registration of persons convicted of committing a reportable offence under the Community Protection Act.

"Further (we) would like to see all convictions for serious offences against children attract a lifetime reporting period," she added.
