Bushwalker fails to cancel call for help

As police mounted a large-scale search effort across a section of bushland in northern Tasmania, the man they were looking for was safe and sound at a friend's house.

Victorian man AJ Ahmed Rogzay, 34, raised the alarm on Monday night, calling triple zero to say he was injured and needed help after hitchhiking out of Launceston to go bushwalking.

But Mr Rogzay was unable to pinpoint his location and authorities could not trace his phone.

After hours of searching, including the use of a rescue helicopter, on Tuesday morning, Mr Rogzay was found to have been staying with a friend at the small centre of Pioneer.

"Police contacted the man's friends in Victoria last night and this morning were advised (he) had returned to the home of an associate near Pioneer last night and was safe and well," Acting Inspector Rick Newman said.

"Police would like to remind people if you do make contact with police and no longer need our help, please make sure you let us know."
