Bushfire near homes in Tas Huon Valley

A bushfire in Tasmania's Huon Valley is no longer threatening homes, but firefighters are still trying to get it under control.

The 15-hectare blaze was at risk of threatening homes in Ashlins Road, Geeveston, and Glocks Road, Waterloo, but crews have managed to construct containment lines, a Fire Service spokesman said on Thursday.

Residents are advised to activate their bushfire safety plans, leave now if there is a clear path to safety or stay and defend if their homes are well prepared.

A total fire ban has been declared in Southern Tasmania with strong north-westerly winds and temperatures nearing 30C in some areas on Thursday.
