Bones and backpack found in Tas bushland

It's still unclear as to the identity of a man whose skeletal remains were found in a remote Tasmanian forest, near a backpack containing foreign currency.

Two hikers stumbled across the bones on Sunday in Huon Valley bushland south of Hobart, some 10km west of the popular Tahune Airwalk.

The bones, found away from marked tracks, likely belong to a man and could have been there for six years, police say.

A backpack was found nearby containing food, clothing, Swiss Francs and Hong Kong dollars, with receipts for exchange in Switzerland in December 2010.

Detective Acting Sergeant Michael Manning said it appeared the man wasn't prepared for an overnight stay.

Paperwork found in the backpack indicates he may have been staying in Western Australia.

A report is being prepared by the coroner.
