Activist wants Eggs and Bacon name change

Animal rights advocates have proposed a name change for Tasmania's Eggs and Bacon Bay, arguing the title promotes unhealthy living and should instead be called Apple and Cherry Bay, based on local fruit-growing.

In a letter to the Huon Valley mayor, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) director Ashley Fruno said the proposal is designed to keep bacon, eggs, and other animal-derived foods off the plates of residents for the sake of their health, for the environment, and for animals.

"Considering the high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat in both eggs and bacon, the area may as well be called 'Heart Attack Bay'," she said, offering to distribute vegan apple pies to residents if the name change goes ahead.
