The federal government has promised $1.5 million for ongoing environmental rehabilitation works on Launceston's Tamar River, if re-elected.

Visiting the north Tasmanian city on Tuesday, Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the stage-two funding will progress works to improve water quality, reduce siltation, remove sediment and prevent future pollution.

The federal government previously contributed $2.5 million to get work started on the project.
