Tas bureaucrats to fight nepotism claims

Two top Tasmanian bureaucrats accused of nepotism by the state's Integrity Commission will fight the allegations.

The chief executives of two Tasmanian Health Organisations (THOs) were named in the report, tabled in parliament this week by Health Minister Michael Ferguson.

Jane Holden, the acting CEO of THO-South, was given 48 hours to explain why she should not be sacked while Gavin Austin, CEO of THO-North-West, has been suspended pending a code of conduct investigation.

Among the allegations are that Ms Holden did not follow proper process when both her husband and Mr Austin were employed in THOs.

Mr Austin is accused of improperly employing his wife and son.

Ms Holden has rejected the claims.

"The issue here is that the report does not include all of the evidence and I have every intention that the public sees all of the evidence and this issue is discussed in an open and transparent way," she told ABC radio.

She dismissed the suggestion Mr Austin was "a mate" and denied she'd made sure her husband was the successful applicant for a maintenance job.

"It wasn't a scheme, it wasn't some conniving thing," she said.

Mr Austin has said he disputes the allegations but is unable to comment further.
