Sydney’s Taronga Zoo has welcomed the birth of a Fennec Fox kit - the world’s smallest species of fox.

The kit, who was born on December 3, has recently begun exploring it’s surroundings, venturing outside its nest box.

“We’re seeing it playing, rolling around on its back and chasing after mum and dad,” Deb Price, a keeper at the zoo said.

The Fennec Fox is the first kit to be born at Taronga Zoo since 2013.

It is yet to be named, and its sex has not yet been confirmed.

The infant is the seventh kit to be born to parents Kebili and Zinder.

“The parents are doing a fantastic job again, with Zinder proving to be a particularly attentive dad,” Ms Price said.

“We’ve seen him filling up his mouth with food and then racing back to deliver it to the kit.”

Keepers are monitoring its progress.
