Sydney’s Taronga Zoo has welcomed the birth of a newborn endangered gorilla.

The male Western Lowland Gorilla baby was born on September 1 to mum Mbeli and father Kibali.

Primate keeper Alison Smith said Mbeli and the newborn are both doing very well under the watchful eyes of the keepers and vets.

“Mbeli is a very relaxed and confident mother,” Ms Smith said.

“Her mother was a fantastic role model for her so she has taken that on and is really attentive toward the baby. In turn, the baby is getting stronger every day.”

The newborn is the seventh Western Lowland Gorilla at the zoo.

A competition will be run over the next two weeks to find him the perfect name.
