Taronga Zoo welcomes adorable baby chimp

Sydney’s Taronga zoo has welcomed an adorable baby chimpanzee.

The newborn, whose gender has not yet been formally identified, was born on November 14 to 27-year-old mother Ceres, after a brief labour.

The new chimp is doing well and bonding with its mother and has been welcomed by the other chimpanzees at the zoo.

Senior Primate Keeper Richard Buzas said Ceres, who is not a first-time mum, is “doing all the right things, feeding and caring for her baby”.

Mr Buzas, who feels confident the newborn is girl, said the baby will be given a name that reflects its African heritage and will begin with the letter ‘C’ “to show the Chimp’s relationship with Ceres”.

Ceres has only been at Taronga zoo for two years after being transferred from a Danish zoo in 2015.

Chimpanzees are listed as endangered with as few as 150,000 remaining in the wild.
