Woman jailed over 62 tonnes of infested Thai products on Sydney black market

A woman has been jailed for importing more than 62 tonnes of illegal and infested meat and produce from Thailand to sell on the black market in Sydney.

The federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said it was tipped off by a confidential source.

An investigation into the matter found that a woman had coordinated the import of illegal pork products, insect-infested fruit and vegetables, frog meat and raw prawns by misdeclaring them.

She swapped out the products and used fake and misleading documents to try to get through biosecurity controls.

Deputy secretary of biosecurity, compliance and operations Justine Saunders said the import had created several biosecurity risks to Australia.

"Australia is free from many of the pests, weeds and diseases that impact agricultural productivity and the environment in other parts of the world," she said in a statement.

"Our biosecurity officers work tirelessly to keep these pests out.

"Illegal activity can undermine Australia's animal, plant and human health status and our excellent global reputation."

The department said it seized the goods and "mitigated" the biosecurity risks.

The woman was charged with nine biosecurity-related offences.

She was sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment to be served through an intensive corrections order and 150 hours of community service on June 11.
