Sydney to be drenched with more rain as dust storm hits Adelaide

Sydney has been drenched with more than a month's rain in 48 hours, with Penrith seeing the heaviest September rainfall in 13 years.

The wet conditions aren't expected to ease anytime soon, with showers set to continue into the evening.

A strong wind warning remains in place for the Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

Rain is expected to clear by tomorrow as a high becomes dominant over the Tasman Sea, however another cold front is expected to bring more wet conditions at the weekend.

Sydney's main water supply, Warragamba Dam, has been hit with 16mm in the past two days.

Sadly, there has been no significant rainfall anywhere near any of the drought-affected areas in NSW.

The news comes as South Australia is preparing to be hit with dust storms with strong northerly winds with gusts up to 90km/h.

Strong winds are expected to send dry top soil from the far north to the Adelaide Metro area, with peak of the storms expected from lunchtime.

The Bureau of Meteorology said  Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna, Maitland, Kingscote, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and Murray Bridge are all expected to be affected.

Police are urging drivers to take extra care on the roads because of expected poor visibility.

SA Health is also warning people with cardiac and respiratory conditions to stay indoors.

Elsewhere around the country, Brisbane and Melbourne will be sunny with tops of 24C and 22C, respectively. 

Perth is tipped for showers with a top of 15C.
