Sydney commuters are facing widespread train delays, with transport officials urging travellers to consider other travel options.

Urgent signal repairs at Ashfield earlier today are to blame for significant gaps in services this afternoon, with crowds building up on platforms across the city.

The delays are continuing into peak hour and are affecting the T1 North Shore and Western Line, T2 Inner West and Leppington Line, T3 Liverpool and Inner West Line, T9 Northern Line, Blue Mountains Line and Central Coast and Newcastle Line.
