Sydney scientists expected to report ‘near complete elimination’ of cancer in mesothelioma patient

Sydney scientists are expected to this week report impressive survival rates and a reversal of symptoms in dogs with brain tumours undergoing trials of a “Trojan horse” therapy.

Dr Jennifer MacDiarmid and Dr Himanshu Brahmbatt from EnGeneIC have also reportedly recorded a “near complete elimination” of symptoms in one human male mesothelioma patient undergoing the therapy, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of mesothelial tissues that is especially associated with asbestos exposure.

The therapy involves using bacterially derived nanocells to enter the tumour cancer cells and deliver anti-cancer drugs that kill the cells from the inside, while also stimulating the immune system’s natural anti-tumour response.

“A remarkable result has been achieved where one late-stage patient has had near complete elimination of his tumour and many others have achieved stable disease (cancer neither decreasing or increasing),” Dr MacDiarmid said.

The results will reportedly be published in a peer-reviewed international scientific journal this week.
