Kids 'can't play in yard' after frequent fence crashes

Sue Alder could quite possibly have the most crashed through fence in Australia.

The grandmother from Sydney’s Northern Beaches said cars have smashed through her fence “at least 15 times” in the last couple of decades.

“It’s well known around the area that this is the fence that’s hit quite often,” Ms Alder said.

The notorious stretch of Prince Charles Road in Frenchs Forest becomes a major hazard for motorists in the wet as they have to navigate a tight S-bend.

“This year we've had two accidents, one in February and one in June. The one in February involved three vehicles but separate incidences,” Ms Alder said.

She no longer lets her grandchildren play in the front garden for fears that a car may come crashing through the fence and hit one of them.

It’s not just Ms Alder's fence that becomes a magnet for out-of-control vehicles.

On the other side of the road, local resident Jane said she’s had “at least four” cars crash into her fence.

Next-door neighbours Sarah and Ben said they brace themselves for impact as soon as there’s a bit of rain.

“We're not quite sure which fence it will go through, sometimes it's across the road, sometimes it's the one next to us,” Ben said.

Local residents are said to have been complaining to council about this accident blackspot for years, to no avail.

In a statement to A Current Affair, Northern Beaches Council said they plan “to install a number of traffic calming devices over the coming months to improve safety on this road including pedestrian refuge islands, intersection realignment, and other works to address the speed of vehicles entering the corner in question.”
