Residents around Manly Dam on Sydney's Northern Beaches were yesterday warned to prepare to evacuate, as torrential rain caused chaos in Australia's biggest city.

Strong gusty winds in excess of 110km/h struck Botany Bay last night, battering the city after heavy rain all day.

Those gusts have since eased, and the east coast low, which dumped huge rainfall on Sydney, has moved offshore.

Major flooding is continuing today in the Hawkesbury area, with Hawkesbury River water levels in Windsor expected to peak around midday.

About 800 properties were impacted when the Manly Dam spilled yesterday.

The Northern Beaches area was one of the worst affected by the relentless rain which hammered much of New South Wales.

Floodwaters quickly rose in Freshwater, Brookvale, Curl Curl and surrounding suburbs.

A car park in Brookvale had about two feet of water in the bottom of it, and water rose to the rim of wheels of vehicles on the nearby streets.

Pittwater Road in Manly was swamped, causing cars to float on the Roseville Bridge.

Some roads in Manly Vale, Freshwater and Curl Curl were also cut off, with public bus services cancelled throughout the Northern Beaches and Lower North Shore.
