A man has been arrested after allegedly starting a fire in the carpark of a Sydney apartment block before leading police on a rooftop chase.

Emergency services were called to a complex on Nobbs Street, in Surry Hills about 3am this morning where a camper trailer and a nearby vehicle were found alight in the basement carpark.

Residents were evacuated and the fire was extinguished within a few hours. No one was injured and there are no reports of damage to the apartments.

A few hours later police were called to reports of a break and enter at a rooftop premises in the area.

"Surry Hills police attended and began chasing a man across rooftops when he attempted to flee before he was arrested while allegedly armed with a crowbar," police said in a statement.

The man is in police custody and is yet to be charged.
